First Blooms

The camellias in our front yard are one of the first bushes to be in bloom every spring.

The red one always coming along a little behind the pink one.

Many of the plants in our yard were put in twenty five years ago,
when I was about the age our youngest child is now!
Maybe that is why I do not know the names of many of them
 . . . such as this one

or this one. I think they are a type of rhododendron.

Last weekend I went out and cut clippings of what was growing in the yard.

and a few days later noticed buds had opened right in the vase.

These first appear as lime green buds that resemble closed fists (third photo from top)
and soon each little finger opens up into a yellow flower . . . to display a large pom-pom like flower. Such intricate beauty in the open hand!

So beautiful! Thankfully we don't have to know their names to appreciate them,

And how profound the metaphorical beauty of an open hand

There is something about the prefection of first blooms !
I do love camellias - I love their beauty but also their 'sturdiness'...They remind me of how we are not only beautiful in Christ but also strong!

This post made me feel how close we all really are. Here in Australia, practically another world from Canada, I also grow camellias. I,however, see their beauty transpiring in our winter. They bring light on dull days.

The camellias are beautiful! I wonder if I could grow them here, seems like people grow them further south of VA. I should give it a try. Maybe you said this already, but are they evergreen? I love the arrangement you made, so lovely.

How beautiful. It's so nice to enjoy the blooms. I never think to cut them because I like seeing them outside and they are so beautiful and guess what? I don't know all the names either...
Your blooms could make beautiful bridal bouquets.

Kathy, Yes the bushes stay green all year long . . . tough, dark green leaves that look like they have been waxed. We prune them in the summer or fall. By March they are full of buds. I don't see why they would not do well where you live.
