For anyone who has never been to Palm Springs, I know that pictures can give you the illusion that you are on a beautiful beach, but this is not the case. It is an oasis in the middle of a desert. I gather that the name gives away the reason why there is such beauty in this place and that there must be springs abounding, because water does not seem to be an issue. Anything that gets watered grows beautifully. The golf courses are among the top in the world and the landscapers take a lot of pride in creating the most amazing flower gardens.
I am not quite sure why we first decided to see this place, but it all began with a road trip in 1977 . . .

We went back when I was pregnant with Julene the following year and again when I was a couple of months along with Kristal. When Ben was a baby, we took the girls and left him with Oma and Opa. (The trip when one of the girls insisted, "I miss Benji RIGHT NOW!")
We continued driving down almost every Spring Break that the kids had, usually stopping off in L.A. to visit Knotts Berry Farm and/or Disneyland.By the time the kids were in high school we had figured out how to make it down in a day and a half. The highlight was to come to the school with our car packed and the kids all skipping their final class so that we could make it to Medford that night. There were no bathroom breaks unless the car needed filling up and we could squeeze in a meal . . . maybe I could run across the street to order while the car was being filled up. We had a system going that the kids will probably laugh about now. Sometimes we met up with friends or family.

In some ways you could say we were spoiled and that we spoiled our kids, but it was still an economic way to do a vacation in the sun and a wonderful way for us to get away from the family business, which is hard to get away from when you stay close to home.
It didn’t come as a huge surprise to us when Kristal decided to do her final two years of study at Azusa Pacific University in Los Angeles. This is where she got to know Shaun. And one day the call came . . . you know the one . . . (daddy, I met a man in . . .)
In the Spring of 2002 we went down to meet him and we spent a few days together in Palm Springs. On this short trip, we celebrated Easter with them at the Marriott Hotel where he had been asked to lead worship for an outdoor church service. We were quite impressed!

Oh . . . and on this same weekend Shaun asked us for Kristal’s hand in marriage! I still can’t get over the whirlwind experience of that one! But another memory was made in Palm Springs!

A few years later, in 2004, Julene and her husband Chris were preparing to go overseas, and the base for their mission agency happened to be not far from Palm Springs. With Kristal and Shaun living in L.A. and Julene and Chris studying in Redlands, we decided that Palm Springs would be the final place for all of us to celebrate Easter and so we did!

It was later that year when Julene and Chris left for Indonesia with two little ones. And so 2004 was the last Easter that we were all together.

And so 2004 was the last Easter that we were all together. So, maybe knowing all of this makes Palm Springs a little more than just a holiday destination. It’s a place where memories have been made. Last week Shaun and Kristal joined us with their two little ones. It was a little like having them home. We cooked breakfast and lunch in the condo and enjoyed some dinners out. The grandkids were probably a bit confused about why we were living “somewhere else” ( in fact, Natalie did say that she liked our "other" house in Canada better) but the smiles we got from them, non-the-less, when they saw us were priceless!

Anneliese, I loved all the history of your memories in Palm Springs and I had to chuckle when my carnal side of my nature. . said wow. .you were spoiled. .and then you yourself admitted it. . We've only been there once. . . and indeed it is a beautiful place and it wouldn't take much to convice me to make more memories there. While we were taking in the cool ocean air on our last trip . .I did mention. . we should pull this little house to Palm Springs. .maybe next year.
I also agree that it is a good thing that God gives us what we need to know for each day ..and surely he has each of our lives sorted out. . what a blessing. Thank you for this great post Anneliese.
What a lovely trip down memory lane. I enjoyed the pictures and stories very much.
Hi Aunt Lisa,
Welcome home! I love your post. I had to smile looking at the pics of us in Palm Springs with you guys! I remember I was in grade 9 at the time, and we surprised Julene & Kristal that we were coming along on the trip! I'll never forget all of our screams of excitment :) Oh, and of course someone ALWAYS had matching bathing suits when we were together - I guess that year it was me & Kristal!
love, Bonnie
Wonderful post. My wife and I have been here 2 weeks and are just heading back to Canada tomorrow. We had my mother-in-law and 2 of our sons down with us our first week and now our oldest daughter (pregnant with her first) with her husband. Hot and dry but lovely. Went hiking yesterday and just swimming by the pool today. All the while building up our own "family history." Thanks for the post.
What a great place to make memories...and you do have many!
We have been there a number of times over the past twenty years...and always love it. Our memories always include the friends that we met there.
Wow, that's amazing...I loved your description about Palm springs.
An Oasis in a desert.
This was my first time, and I struggled so much not seeing the ocean. Hawaii has been our second home over our past 30 years....
But I know I will be back to Palm Springs. The Marriott is gorgeous.
I loved walking through the grounds.
It's always amazing how things turn out..
I always remember you guys heading down to Palm Springs every year, with different combinations of friends and family. It seemed like such an exotic and mysterious place to my little girl mind. It was fun to read about all the memories you guys have made there - what a special for you all. I loved the old pictures in this post!
You have a beautiful family! What a blessing!
Great post, Lisa. Love the first picture of you and your sweetheart.

I miss Palm Springs RIGHT NOW!!! Mom, this was such a great post!
How neat is it that Palm Springs has that history for you. We started going during spring break when our kids were in High School- in lieu of a summer holiday. (They had summer jobs) It was great to share our holiday with other families as well.
But our family's favourite spot is a little lake near Savona BC. We've gone fishing there since we were first married and it is so special to our kids.
I love this post!
And you know, in my home I still have some of the gifts that Julene brought home from some of her Spring Break Palm Spring trips for me! :)
What a whirlwind of memories - love it!
How fun to read your history of Palm Springs and I too remember all the many trips your family took while our kids only got to visit my aunt and uncle in Seattle!!!They would all agree that your kids were sooooo spoiled! :-)
And I remember the one Spring Break when we were in LA and came to visit you in Palm Springs with Jody and guess who? Kari!!!! Who knew that she would one day become a Friesen and go to Palm Springs every year too!
I can hardly wait to catch up. Tomorrow will be one last very full day of trying to get everything done for Jods before I fly home on Wednesday morning...can hardly wait to catch up on our walk on Friday morning.
Oh one last thought..Jody mentioned today that on that one shot of Teyha she has the same profile as Caily does now? So interesting...see you soon my friend.
I really loved this post. Family....what a blessing. Every member brings something unique and wonderful, making it complete. I remember your girls very well at that age. I agree that one day at a time is the best. We have built some neat memories in PS as well and met your little Natalie at pool side when she was just a new born. Her grandpa was the proudest guy ever:) In 10,20 or even 30 years from now we will look back on this time we are living right now...makes you want to make the most of each day. Keep enjoying your family. Kathy
Wow Anneliese... great post! It's nice to know all the history behind why you go there so much. Do you own a place down there?
I remember being SO jealous in high school of all the kids at MEI who went to Palm Springs every spring break... specifically in PE when they'd have really tanned legs in March, while mine were still stark white! ha ha... the memories!
Thanks for sharing your story.
Are you still thinking of visiting Shanghai anytime soon?
What a wonderful post, and what a lovely reminder of how God blesses us each day, throughout the years of our lives, each differently according to our needs. I would say we all have a "Palm Springs" in our lives, a place where memories gather and families grow. Thanks such a lot for sharing that with us, the blog world, I come to your posts for peace and I always find it. Take care, Lori xxx
How special that God chose a special place to build your special memories on.
You have a beautiful family, Anneliese.
There have been a few times when I have somehow I tried to explain to my American friends that I partly feel American ... this blog post explains why!
Beautiful post, by the way. Such amazing memories that we share! Thank you for reminding me.
