Hawaii - Twenty Five Years Ago

Although we took the kids on many a road trip and flew to far away places, such as Brazil and Eastern Europe, we only flew to Hawaii once as a family. The photos remind me of a very different time.

A time when the flight, in itself, was already an appetizer to what was to come, with a beautiful meal served on fine china.

A time when vehicles needed a bit more room to maneuver the curves and parking stalls,

and I'm sure the Honolulu skyline has a few more high rises in its view today.

The kids were easily entertained . . .

some empty drink containers and lots of sand kept them happy.

Not sure where this parrot came from, but he must have had an owner roaming the beach.

And yes ... it was a time when mom catching a football brought a huge smile to a little guy.

We introduced the kids to papaya with lemon and sugar.

and ventured out to more deserted beaches to watch the surfers.

Yes, we did the other touristy things that come along with a trip to the Big Island, but these are some of my favorites. I wonder if we'll go back one day and how many we'd be.

I think a family holiday to Hawaii would be a lot of fun - especially with grandchildren. They always seem to think that a grandma is the most fun, whether tossing a football or reading a story or introducing new food.

What fun. That is really an amazing historical shot in the airplane with that meal in front of you! I think you still can get a nice meal like that on British airways...or maybe not. Wonderful, Anneliese.

What fun pictures! In the airplane pic, I can really see Lacey in Kristal's profile.

I've never been very athletic and only get laughs when I try to throw a ball with my ball-throwing-boy-Ben! :-)

Kathy,
I had another look at that airplane photo and realized I scanned it incorrectly. My left hand has no ring on it!
About the Ben-throwing-boy-ball .... yes, mine probably almost laughed at me too ... but I just pretend it was a smile of admiration that I remember. Put it this way, his throwing-a-football ability at age 4 was better than my catching-a-football ability.

What a fun glimpse into the past - when flying was a dress-up kind of adventure. You all look so charming.

Oh my - those pictures are fantastic. The airline could use that one for their advertising! I love your bathing suit - you all look amazing. You MUST plan to have a family vacation again some day - in Hawaii - how memorable that would be!

So fun! I remember your family at that stage in life. Our youngest daughters looked so much alike....do you remember that? Same hair cut too! Loved this post.

What wonderful pictures - helping you to remember a special vacation with your family. Yes, flying was a way different experience back then. It was so special that we actually got dressed up in our nicest outfits for the occasion!

Only to look back..that was a special memory and I loved the flights elegant form of dining.
Come out Anneliese and I'll show you how we can still throw a football or kick a soccer ball if you give me some special hints in the kitchen.
I love these aging photos and memories.

What a wonderful memory and how great to have it all scanned and documented online. It's a little daunting to think of trying to do that. But you are inspiring me!

I didn't realize how much things had really changed with flying until I saw your photo. Fine china on a flight? Maybe I never flew the right airline! I always enjoyed the meals...that I remember. And now they are sadly missing.

What great memories of your family vacation in Hawaii!

Beautiful memories . . . and a wonderful photographic look at our world 25 years ago! Love all the smiles, too!

I'd like to say you are much older than me because I never ate on china like that on a plane..but maybe I did not go on a plane and that is why I didn't get in on the china service.
It is beautiful to see the photos of your family and the time you took to vacation with them.
Such fun photos!
